Wednesday 22nd. Sunny, blue skies slowly produced Cumulus and then increasingly cloudy skies as a light to moderate WSW'ly slowly backed into the SSW. 32 ATs were flown off runway 24, with some landings on runway 20, including 6 for First Flight pupils and 10 for private owners, with 12 flights exceeding 30 minutes and 6 an hour, weak thermal being the main source of lift. All but one of the soaring flights remained local, with cloud base rising to around 3,000' asl and average peak thermal strengths around 1.5 to 2 kts. The exception to the local flying was Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct who used thermal and engine to eventually progress to the Wharfedale/Coverdale/Bishopsdale area where, with further engine use, found some weak wave which took Bob to his peak altitude of 7,800' asl before he returned to site, landing after 4:49. The other 5 > an hour pilots were visitors Barney Wainwright in his DG300, 2:42, Elaine Bunting in her LS4, 1:44 and Nobby Noble/Suzie Forbes in K21 KLW, 1:00, while YGC pilots were represented by Steve Thompson in Astir DPO, 1:10 and Eileen Scothern in her Discus t with 1:01. The soaring conditions were, however, not entirely straightforward, as visitor Tim Guille in his ASW19 landed out north of Sutton village. In addition to the above activity, the Falke had 3 local sorties.
