Wednesday 22nd. A generally cloudy day, but with sufficient thermal activity to lead to 10 flights of 30 minutes or more from the 19 ATs and 1 self launch off runway 02 into a initially moderate N'ly that slowly decreased to light and backed into the WNW. Cloud base was around 4,500' asl and average peak climb rates around 2-3 kts. 3 pilots soared for over an hour, with Les Rayment in his DG808 flying the only XC of the day, a 1:35 trip around the local 100 km Pocklington/Rufforth triangle, while Andrew Wilmot in his ASW19 had 2:17 and Peter Goodchild in his Discus bt had 3:15. Andrew stayed local while Peter's trace did not provide any details of his flight. The longest flights in club gliders were the 52 minutes by Dave McKinney/Tony Kirkby in K21 KLW and the 46 minutes by Mark James in Astir DPO, both flown locally. 4 First Flight pupils were flown. with the Falke having 2 flights, one of which saw Andrew Bedford/Derek Smith visit Tockwith, Wetherby S and Rufforth, indulging in some simulated landing excercises there.
This blog describes a snippet of life at the Yorkshire Gliding Club. Why not take a flight and try it yourself, or we can teach you to fly as a full club member.
