Tuesday 20th to Wednesday 21st February 2024

Tuesday 20th.  A moderate to moderate to fresh S'ly soon veered into the SW, necessitating a change of runway after 5 winch launches off runway 20.  The switch to runway 24 saw a further 6 winch launches flown.  The launches off 20 realised release heights of around 800' to 900' and with some weak lift to be found just forward of the White Horse and Wass ridges, extended circuits were the norm, with Bob Calvert in the Discus having 31 minutes, initially climbing to and maintaining 1100' to 1300' QFE. The  last winch launch off 20 coincided with the wind shift from S'ly to SW'ly, with the result that Les Rayment/Duncan Pask in K21 had 1:35 soaring the home W'ly bowl between 700' and a peak of 1100' QFE before landing on runway 24.    Other  pilots to have >1 hour included Austin Harland in Astir DSU with 1:07 and Bruce Grain/Tor Tavener in K21 JVZ with 1:13. Those having between 30 and 50 minutes included Roger Burghall in DSU with 34 minutes, Dave McKinney/Neil Amons in K21 KLW, 37 minutes and Bob Calvert in the Discus, 55 minutes.  Bruce and Tor traversed the main W'ly ridge to High Paradise Farm during their flight, while Bob had a couple of ventures west to Bagby and Sutton village without finding any lift.

Wednesday 21st.  A moderate to fresh S'ly veered into the WSW as another Atlantic front crossed the UK bringing a morning of rain and low cloud.  The clearance to sunny skies in the afternoon came too late for any flying.
