Thursday 29th to Saturday 31st July 2021

Thursday 29th.   A moderate/moderate to fresh W'ly meant it was a winching day, with 27 flown off runway 24, including 5 by private owners.  The majority of flights took advantage of hill lift with a few utilising some weak wave, with 23 of the day's 27 flights exceeding 30 minutes and 9 exceeding an hour.  Jesper Mjels in  his DG400 had just over 4 hours, utilising weak wave and getting to the west of Ripon with a peak altitude of 5,400' asl.  Bill Payton had 2 flights in his DG 1000, first with Paul Bulmer and the second with Dave McKinney, both over 2 hours. Bill visited the Tontine and Guisborough West although with whom I am not certain.  The Club Discus  also utilised hill lift to get to Osmotherly but with 3 flights in the day by Ron Beezer, Chris Knapp and Conrad Thwaites of between 47 minutes and 1:37, the available data does not permit identification of the Osmotherly bound pilot, so I will have to leave it to you to make your own prediction.  Flights of over an hour were split 5/4 to the advantage of private owners, but with Ron Beezer and Chris Knapp's efforts in the Discus, Clive Swain/Rowan Newill in K21 JVZ, with exactly an hour and Ron Beezer/Charlie Atkins in the same glider with 1:10 made sure two seaters were fully represented.

Friday 30th.  A day of low cloud and rain, 9.0 mm falling after lunch, meant it was a no flying day.

This blog describes a snippet of life at the Yorkshire Gliding Club. Why not take a flight and try it yourself, or we can teach you to fly as a full club member.
