Thursday 22nd. Showery rain and strong winds delayed the start of flying until the early afternoon, by which time the WSW'ly had become moderate to fresh, so it was again a winching day off runway 24. Only 5 launches resulted, but all recorded flight times of over an hour, ranging from Bob Johnson/Jim Pirera's 1:26 in their DG1000t as they mainly used thermal to explore out to the East Coast main line and east of Leeming, to Bob Calvert's 5:20 in his Discus 2ct. Wave lift was again utilised, with Bob Calvert, Fred Brown and Clive Thomas/Martin Hollowell in the first flight of their DG1000t that day reaching 10,300', 13,100' and 6,700', all asl, respectively. Fred was the first to contact the wave after an hour of local flying in thermal and wave, contact being made over the forward ridge, where Bob also contacted later, while Clive/Martin contacted the wave 4 km S of Sutton after 2 hrs of local soaring at 600-1,600' QFE. Fred subsequently visited at or near Boroughbridge, Ripon, Aysgarth and Masham, reaching his maximum altitude of 13,100' asl near Masham and clocking up 146 OLC km in total. Bob went to or near Ripon, Leyburn, Pateley Bridge, Wetherby S, Catterick and Boroughbridge in covering 252 OLC kms, with his max altitude of 10,300 reached near Ripon. Bob reported strong wave lift between convective storms particularly over the Vale of York and provided the following photo.
The day's other flight saw John Forrester have 2:10 in the Discus as he mainly soared the main W'ly ridge up to Boltby but also visited Thirsk and the Black Hambleton ridge.
