Sunday 28th.  A light and variable wind settled into the S, becoming light to moderate and, after a slow start, a good soaring day developed with 7 cross country flights posted on the BGA Ladder, ranging from 156 to 428 km and 7 additional cross country flights flown.  The 428 km flight was by Rob Bailey in his ASG29 with TPs at Carlton Bank and Peterborough, while 3 pilots flew a 328 km task around Sheffield South and Horncastle.  The three were Steve Thompson in his Ventus 2bt, Paul Whitehead in his Ventus 2cxt and Dave Latimer in his Ventus 3M, both Steve and Dave having a sticky patch around Horncastle. Fred Brown in his Ventus 2ct also flew a 300 with an O/R to Grantham, 304 km to be precise, as did Les Rayment in his DG800, while Adam Sayer in his ASW19 flew his first 200, a 200.2 km journey around Beverley, Garforth and Northallerton and Sam Batchelor flew Astir DSU 156 km with TPs at Rufforth. Pocklington, Sutton and Tockwith.   Other XC pilots included Bill Payton flying his DG1000t solo, who, after going to Churchhouses did an O/R to Boston, 378 km, Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct, 277 km  via Carlton Bank, Danby, Snainton, near Hornsey Mere to Kirton in Lindsey and home, Clive Swain, 283 km via York East and  Ripon before getting near to Masham, Northallerton, Foston, Guisborough W and Ripon and then finding some weak wave at Topcliffe, Sarah Stubbs in the Discus, 160 km around Market Weighton, Beverley, North Duffield and Rufforth, 138 km by John Marsh in his DG303 with TPs at Helmsley, Boroughbridge, Ripon and Northallerton and 71 km by James Horton in Astir DPO who visited Helperby, Easingwold and got to within 3 km of Kirbymoorside, all the above distances via OLC.  Most of the above pilots climbed to at least 5,000' asl, as did Malcolm Morgan/Lincoln Emmond in K21 KLW as they posted the longest club 2 seater flight of the day at 1:37 with some getting to between 5,500 and 6,000' asl, average peak thermal strengths being typically around 4 kts but with a recorded 6 kts by one pilot.   Overall, the day's 40 launches off runway 20, including 2 for First Flight pupils, resulted in 27 over 30 minutes with 22 of  these over an hour, with most of the latter by the 16 private owners who launched.
