Sunday 27th. A mainly cloudy day with some thermal activity as a light to moderate WNW/W'ly blew, generated 12 flights of 30 minutes or more, of which 3 exceeded an hour. All but one of these soaring flights stayed local with peak altitudes around 3,500' to 4100' asl and the best average peak climb rates of 2,5 kts. Martin Johnson in his DG600 had 2:45 mainly in thermal, but fitted in a spell hill soaring the home bowl before landing, while Fred Brown/Colin Troise in K21 JVZ had 1:01 thermal soaring off the penultimate launch of the day. Nigel Burke in K21 KLW with one of the day's 8 First Flight pupils and Sanjay Nath flying Astir DPO, each had 45 minutes. The rest of the 30 to 40 minute flights were all in club 2 seaters and mainly for First Flight pupils, but Sam Batchelor had 2 flights in this range, both with Fred Brown in K21s JVZ and KLW. The only pilot to go XC was Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct. Bob set off N, but had to resort to his engine to the ESE of Northallerton, getting to 5,500' asl S of Leeming and then flying to near Ripon before returning to Sutton and going N again. Visiting Tontine Bob went on to do some hill soaring on the NW face of Carlton Bank before returning to the hills near Tontine for some more hill/thermal soaring. Returning to site, Bob continued his hill soaring in the home bowl at around 900' QFE before landing after 5:06.
