Sunday 20th to Monday 21st July 2025

Sunday 20th. A flabby low pressure covered the UK bringing low cloud, murk and 13 mm rain from 1400 to 2100 hrs on a light to moderate ESE'ly so there was no flying.
Monday 21st. The day's forecast heavy showers and thunderstorms did not materialise until early evening, so by then, 14 ATs and 2 Falke sorties had been flown off runway 20. Bob Calvert was the only private owner to launch into a light to moderate SSE'ly and briefly used his engine to connect with a thermal over Thirsk before proceeding to near Masham where a cloud climb took him to 6,300' asl. A visit near Leeming was followed by another 6.200' asl cloud climb near Boroughbridge before a return to site via York, Sutton on Forest and Castle Howard, Bob's 2:37 flight covering 118 OLC kms. Bob's was not the only flight of over an hour, as Andreas Rieder/Clare Johnson in K21, had 1:01, climbing from their release height of 1,300' to 4,800' asl and spending around 10 minutes without circling at around 3,200' asl. There was also one flight of more than 30 minutes, Ian McFarlane/Elliot Hindmarsh in K21 JVZ having 31 minutes, their 3,000' tow being followed by use of a few weak thermals that kept them at 1,100' to 1,700' QFE for a time.
