Saturday 23rd. A day of light and variable winds, mainly from the SSE, and Cumulus under a medium level OVC didn't temp too many people to aviate, with 10 ATs off runway 20 the day's total. The only private owner to fly, Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct, had just over 2 hours thermal soaring in an area bounded by Sutton, Sutton on Forest and Castle Howard, reaching 3,800' asl using the day's weak thermals of 1-2 kts. The next 3 longest flights were all in the 30-35 minute range, 2 being for 2 of the day's 5 First Flight pupils and the remaining one being 30 minutes by Matt Oakes in Astir DSU.
Sunday 24th. An altogether better soaring day with the wind still from the SSE but now light to moderate, resulting in 33 ATs from runway 20 with14 flights over 30 minutes of which 9 were over an hour. Two pilots of the 6 private owners to fly went XC, and a Capstan from Pocklington landed in mid afternoon having travelled around 100 km to Sutton via Malton. Steve Thompson in his Ventus 2bt completed a 201 km task with TPs at Guisborough W, Goole NE and Pickering, as cloud base rose to 5,000' asl with average peak thermal climbs around 3-4 kts. Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct flew 190 OLC km visiting or near to Churchhouses, Malton, Burn, Topcliffe and Ripon and indulging in a cloud climb near Churchhouses to 7,200' asl. Those > an hour pilots flying locally included, Steve Scothern in his Discus t, 1:02, John Marsh/Malcolm Morgan in K21 JVZ, 1:03, Matt Oaks in Astir DSU, 1:15, Yuri Kozherov in his PIK 20D, 1:01, Andy Wilson with 1:52, Roger Burghall in Astir DSU, 1:07 and Fred Brown/Sarah Nolan in the DG1000, 1:30.
