Monday 9th. A weak low pressure slowly travelling south across the UK brought an overcast day, but with a cloud base high enough for flying to occur. Operations were initially off runway 20, but with the wind becoming a light to moderate WSW, the rest of the day's 15 ATs were flown off runway 24. Hill and some weak thermal enabled 5 flights to exceed 30 minutes, although none exceeded an hour, with Ian McFarlane/Mark James's 43 minutes being the longest of the day in a glider. This was accomplished by hill soaring the main and adjacent W'ly facing bowls, a slow climb being terminated around 2,300' asl, Three of the other >30 minute flights were by Steve Codd in his Slingsby Capstan, with P2's Andy Evans, Andreas Rieder and Andrew Bedford, while the > 30 minute list was completed by Bob Calvert and one of the day's 3 First Flight pupils in K21 KLW. The Falke had 2 sorties, Bruce Grain/James Horton having 1:30 as they flew 120 km with TP's at or near Pocklington and Knaresborough, indulging in some Touch and Go's at Rufforth, while Paul Whitehead/Andy Evans had 50 minutes flying east to Kirkbymoorside and Fadmoor and having Touch and Go and launch failure practice at Sutton.
