Monday 30th. A moderate S'ly brought in a hot airmass with a peak temperature of 30.8C recorded at Topcliffe. Initially, thermal conditions were tricky with weak thermals and a relatively low cloudbase, but conditions improved as the day progressed, with peak average climb rates reaching around 4 kts and cloudbase rising to over 6,000' asl. The day's 19 ATs off runway 20 included 6 for First Flight Pupils, with 12 flights of over 30 minutes of which 9 were over an hour and 7 XC's flown. These ranged from Dean Crosby's 519 km off the first flight of the day to the 56 km flown by James Shaw/Steve Ogden in K21 JVZ off the last flight of the day. Dean's 6:28 flight in his LS10t took him to Rutland Water Dam, Thorne and Belvoir Castle, while James/Steve's was an 58 minute O/R to Linton on Ouse. In-between these 2 extremes, Steve Thompson in his Ventus 2bt flew a 304 km O/R to Belvoir Castle. Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct flew 277 km to or near Malton, Ripon and Aysgarth, Rob Bailey in his ASG29t did an 106 km O/R with a TP near Pocklington and Eileen Scothern covered 57 km with an O/R TP near Sutton on Forest. The day wouldn't have been complete without a landout, this being provided by Chris Booker in his LS1, this occurring not far from Garforth with 66 km flown. Back at site Dave McKinney had just over 3 hrs flying locally, with the longest 2 seater flight the 1:22 flown by Andreas Rieder/Phil Taylor in K21 JVZ.
