FSH goes to University

The Durham University Gliding Society (DUGS):  Durham gliding on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Dd020ljAIM_/

have been coming to learn to fly with us at Yorkshire Gliding Club for about 5 years.  They have struggled to get members, so this year, for freshers week, they decided to try something a little* different.

The committee from DUGS: Avhusta Rusina (President); Aman Tam (Treasurer); Adam Dransfield (Vice President) came up to the club on Monday 28th September and helped de-rig one of our Astir’s; reg FSH.  They took the wings off and packed it away safe in it’s trailer.

Bright and early on Tuesday 29th September, our CFI, James Shaw, and Konrad Kawalec, drove the trailer up to Durham University’s sports complex, and with the help of the DUGS committee, rigged FSH on the cricket pitch, ready to capture attention!

It was a successful day.  Many of the people signing up were just intrigued, hopefully they’ll catch the bug.  But a least half a dozen were already ‘into’ aviation, some had started doing their Private Pilots Licence (PPL) others were looking to a career in aviation.  For those already familiar with aviation, the incredibly low cost associated with gliding as well as the proximity (as well as the lure of car sharing) was a hit, and they signed up.  Others, having never considered the idea of flying, found themselves drawn to sitting in FSH’s cockpit, operating the controls, and with those experiences, signed up, not just to do something they’d never considered, but something where literally, the sky is the limit!
