Friday 7th. A warm and light to moderate S'ly airmass resulted in a max temperature of 26.9C at nearby RAF Leeming and scattered high Cumulus. 22 ATs were flown off runway 20, including 5 for private owners and 4 for First Flight pupils, the conditions resulting in some cross country flying, climbs to 6,000' asl plus but some difficulties, especially around Easingwold. Bill Payton/Dean Crosby flew the longest XC, around 200 km. After first leaving site and having to resort to the engine of Bill's DG1000t near Easingwold, they returned and reconnected with the lift near site and then visited just W of Scarborough before going on to Market Weighton and Scunthorpe, reaching 5.800' asl. Clive Swain in his Kestrel 19 was another pilot to struggle near Easingwold but also climbed to 6,300' asl in his 4:16 flight mainly flown locally but with a foray to 5 km N of York. John Ellis in his DG800 flew around 165 km, initially adding a flight around the local 100 km triangle to an initial O/R to the Ripon area having 2 low points in the process. Darren Lodge in his LS8-18 also flew the local 100 km triangle, climbing to 6,000' asl, while Nigel Burke flew around 155 km with TP's at Malton, Ripon, Pateley Bridge, Leyburn and Masham. Pilots soaring for over an hour in club gliders included Steve Ogden in Astir FSH, Guy Hartland/J Rennie in K21 JVZ and Bruce Grain, first with Ian Weatherspoon and then with Steve Morgan, both in K21 JVZ. Congratulations are however due to John Forrester who flew his Silver leg 5 hours in Astir DPO, climbing to a max altitude of 6,100' asl.
