Friday 20th to Saturday 21st September 2024

Friday 20th.  A low pressure centre to the S of the UK meant a light to moderate N/NNE'ly wind at Sutton that brought in a low overcast with light rain/Drizzle at times so there was no flying.

Saturday 21st.  The low pressure had moved a little closer to the UK maintaining the light to moderate N/NNE'ly flow and low cloud.  While the low cloud delayed the start of flying until midday,, it broke up to leave a day of sunny periods with the remaining cloud marking some low level wave that was utilised by most of the day's  20 ATs off runway 02.  Surprisingly, with the wind from the N/NNE, the wave was aligned NE/SW with most pilots going upwind  of the site to soar it and some downwind.  The day's launches included 5 for First Flight pupils and 3 for private owners, 2 of whom, syndicate partners Fred Brown and Jame's Prosser having 1:50 and 1:48 respectively in their Ventus 2ct, as James climbed up to 4,500' asl and Fred to 3,700' asl. Both utilised wave to the NE of site, with Fred flying a 14 km long beat centred just to the E of Sutton and James also flying a 5 km long beat centred just to the SW of Helmsley. 6 other flights had durations of 30 minutes or more with Dave McKinney/Ryan Farrant in K21 JVZ  having 48 minutes and Bruce Grain/Mark James in K21 KLW, John Marsh/Julian Hepburn in JVZ and Sarah Stubbs/ a First Flight pupil in KLW all having 32 minutes.  All these flights utilised the wave to the NE of Sutton and even the Falke joined in, but preferring to fly the wave just downwind of the site in its 29 minute flight.
