Sunday 14th.  A moderate NNW'ly started the day but soon veered into the NNE, so operations were off runway 02 with 32 ATs flown plus a Falke flight, while the RF5 from Pocklington made a visit before returning there.  The day was generally cloudy but with embedded lift and 2 pilots flew XC, but  flights over 30 minutes  were limited to 5, with 3 of these over an hour, all flown by Private Owners.  The 2 XC pilots were Rob Bailey in his ASG29t and Chris Teagle in  his LS8-18t.  Rob flew 148  km visiting Carlton Bank, Sutton and Pickeringbefore running into sea air near Malton and struggling to get a climb but eventually escaping to visit York East before returning to site..  He did manage to climb to 4,200' asl elsewhere and had a best climb rate of 3.7 kts, which was pipped by the 3.9 kt climb of Chris as he attempted an O/R to Kirton in Lindsey, a 189 km task. Everything went OK on the 1st leg but a dead area meant a recourse to engine power near Pocklington with 147 km covered.  The other > an hour flight was by Phillip Morgan/James Minx in their Janus C, their 1:03 being flown locally.  John Marsh/Resh Khodabocus in the DG1000 had the longest flight in a club glider, with 41 minutes flown locally, while 8 First Flight pupils were introduced to gliding.  Speaking of firsts, congratulations are due to Matthew Hill who went solo in K21 JVZ off the last flight of the day, with a happy Matthew later ringing the bell in the bar as tradition demands.

This blog describes a snippet of life at the Yorkshire Gliding Club. Why not take a flight and try it yourself, or we can teach you to fly as a full club member.
