Tuesday 9th. An unstable, moderate WSW'ly airstream brought frequent and at times heavy showers to North Yorkshire, but in between, 5 ATs and 3 winch launches were flown off runway 24, with all but one of ther day's flights lasting over 30 minutes, with one of these over an hour, as hill and thermal lift were exploited. Cloud base was around 4,000' asl and peak average climb rates around 2.5 kts, with Austin Harland in Astir DPO having 1:18 as he mainly hill soared the home bowl at 700'-1,100' QFE but did have a thermal climb to 3,900' asl. Austin had taken the first of the winch launches at 15:47 and the 2 that followed both had over 50 minutes soaring. Andreas Rieder/Avhusta Risina, flying the DG1000, had 59 minutes of mixed hill/thermal soaring, the former taking them along the main W'ly ridge to High Paradise Farm, and the latter getting them to 4,000' asl which allowed them an O/R to Ampleforth. James Shaw/Adam Dransfield-Duckworth had 51 minutes in K21 JVZ off the last launch of the day using the main W'ly ridge and took the opportunity to do a simulated launch failure over the site during the flight.
