Monday 28th. A generally cloudy day, with occasional sunny intervals, brought in on a moderate NW'ly wind that slowly backed into the WNW. In spite of the cloudy conditions, there was enough thermal activity to tempt a couple of private owners to go XC, while locally, there was one flight of over an hour and 4 between 30 and 60 minutes. Martyn Johnson in his DG600 was the > an hour local pilot, his 2:36 including a couple of low points at 400' and 200' QFE close to site as well as climb to 3,600' asl, indicating the variability of the day. This variability was also a feature of the flights of Steve Thompson in his Ventus 2bt and Dean Crosby in his LS10t who both flew thermal XCs. Both recorded average peak thermal climbs of 3,2 kts and peak altitudes of 4,200' asl but also low points, Steve having to use his engine some 13 km SE of site while on ,another leg to the SE .having flown to Market Weighton and Thirsk. Steve then abandoned his task, returning N to visit Tontine and continuing on to 4 km NE of Carlton Bank before returning to Sutton. Dean flew 117 OLC km, with TPs at or near Tontine, Carlton Bank, Guisborough W and Pickering, recovering from a 1,200' asl low point near Hemsley on the way back to site. Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct had a number of local thermal climbs to 3,500 -4.000' asl before heading to the Tontine area where, with engine assistance, he set off W via Catterick and Leyburn and contacted wave, eventually climbing to 9.700' asl at Semerwater before returning to site after a flight of 5:57.
