Friday 23rd. Another good soaring day developed after a slow start, sunny blue skies in the morning sprouting Cumulus by midday as a light S'ly slowly veered into the WSW and freshened slightly as a front approached from the W. The morning's flying off runway 20 saw 9 First Flight pupils flown, followed by Dean Crosby in his LS10t, the first of the 18 private owner launches with 11 of these being XC. The day's high cloud base reached over 7,500' asl with average peak climbs 3.5-5,4 kts and there was I XC of over 400 km, 3 over 300 km, 1 over 200 km and 4 over 100 km. Dean in his LS10t was the >400 km pilot, his 430 km being via Oakham, Burn and Scunthorpe, while Martin Newbery in his Ventus ct, and Chris Booker in his LS1 flew the 304 km O/R to Belvoir Castle and Chris Teagle in his LS8t-18 flew 348 km around Melton Mowbray and Colsterworth. Darren Lodge flew 223 km in his LS8-18 with TPs at Burn, Thirsk and Burn, while the >100 km pilots included Toby Wilson in his Std Cirrus and Adam Sayer in his ASW 19 who both abandoned their declared O/R to Belvoir Castle after 170 km and 158 km respectively. The other >100 km pilots were Bob Calvert in his Discus 2ct who flew 176 km with TPs at Linton and Hawes and Andy and Katherine Balkwill who flew 190 km with TPs at or near Pickering, Goole N and Rufforth. Eileen Scothern in her Discus t visited Market Weighton but resorted to her engine on the way back near Sutton on Forest before continuing soaring flight with a visit to Tontine, while Chris Collingham took Astir DPO on an O/R to Northalleton after soaring locally.
