Tuesday 2nd to Wednesday 3rd April 2024

Tuesday 2nd. A murky start to the day delayed the commencement of flying until lunchtime, but thereafter, 35 ATs were flown off runway 20, the first outing of the 2024 Tuesday evening group extending flying until 19:40 hrs. A light SE'ly eventually veered into the W, but lift was hard to come by under generally cloudy skies, so the majority of flights lasted less than 20 minutes with a few exceptions. Derek Smith had 39 minutes in his DG800, but, with no associated Flarm trace, I have no detailed information of his flight. Daniel McClean flying DPO in the early evening had 27 minutes. while earlier in the day Ivan Maczka found some weak thermals that kept him initially at 1.400-1,600' QFE and then at 1,000-1,300' QFE during his 31 minute flight. Guy Hartland/Meng Li in K21 JVZ had 23 minutes and Austin Hartland had 26 minutes in Astir DPO, both flights benefitting from some weak thermal lift. By far the longest flight of the day was by Bob Calvert in his Discus 2t whose 4:05 flight saw him cover around 150 km, visiting areas to the south of York, Sutton on Forest and Masham before returning to Sutton, although some engine use occurred during the flight. The Falke had 2 flights, the 1st being a cross country around Pocklington, Rufforth and Boroughbridge that included some touch and go landings while the second was an O/R to Burn, with a touch and go at Burn and some field landing practice close to Sutton.
Wednesday 5th. Occluded fronts slowly moving north across the region brought low cloud and rain with around 25 mm recorded locally over the day, so there was no flying.
