Tuesday 4th. A moderate WSW'ly blew all day, initially accompanied by overcast skies but the cloud broke up later to provide an day of sunny intervals and Cumulus Congestus. It was a busy day at the club with 27 ATs and 6 winch launches, the latter preceding the former with all launcnes generating 25 flights of over 30 minutes with 14 of these over an hour. The 7 private owners who launched had flight times ranging from 1.59 to 6.04 while the club based flights of >1 hour ranged from 1.02 to 1.35. Most pilots stayed relatively local, combining hill and thermal soaring, with the periphery of their excursions defined by Masham, Ripon, Pateley Bridge, Northallerton, Tontine and Carlton Bank. Climbs to between 5,000' asl to 6,000' asl were common although Clive Swain in his Kestrel 19 took a number of cloud climbs and reached a maximum altitude of around 8,900' asl. Peak climb rates of up to 4 kts were generally achieved with Chris Teagle in his Kestrel 19 having a peak climb of 5.4 kts as he visited Tontine twice but couldn't get any further south of site than Easingwold due to promising looking clouds providing very weak lift.
