Tuesday 1st. A light to moderate NNW'ly progressively veered into the ENE over the course of the day, the anticyclonic conditions bringing mainly blue skies, some weak thermals and weak wave adding interest to the day's flying. 25 AT's off runway 02 behind the Eurofox included 5 in total for Dave McKinney and Laurie Clarke as they progressed with their AssCat training, Laurie also flying the Falke and Derek Smith and Bruce Grain being the P1s. The main soaring of the day was done by Discus pilots, with Bill Payton getting the ball rolling with a flight time of 2:06, mainly the result of utilising some weak wave downwind of the main ridge that allowed him to visit Black Hambleton while maintaining around 3,600' asl. He then followed this up in the later part of his flight using thermal, best average climb rate 1,9kts, to get him to just west of Helmsley, cloud base being around 2,800' asl. He was followed by Martin Newbery who had exactly an hour in the Discus, spending his time in the weak wave north of Sutton Village, which he utilised to get to his best altitude of 4,400' asl. Finally, Rod Brister's Discus flight off the last AT of the day, lasted 1:02, again in the wave, with Rod maintaining around 3,500' asl. In addition to the above, 5 other flights had 30 minutes or more with Duncan Pask's 53 minutes in his LS10t being thermal based but also aided by a test engine run, while Andrew Wilmot in his ASW19 and Chris Handzlik in his DG300 also used the weak thermals to provide flight times in the low 30 minutes. The only other flight of >30 minutes was the 33 minutes flown by Guy Hartland and Polly Whitehead in K21 JVZ.
