Have a First Flight
A First Flight Experience a great way to try something new and experience the delights of soaring flight, or maybe you’d just like to take in the view!
On arrival at the airfield please report to the office. You will be asked to view a video which will tell you about the flight experience and airfield safety. At the launch area your instructor will give you a full briefing on the glider and the flight.
Depending on the weather, your flight will begin with either a tow behind a powered aircraft to around 2000 feet (approx. 600 metres), OR a winch launch to approx 600 ft. It is important to note that the weather will determine the method of launch. After release from the winch or tow aircraft, your qualified instructor will demonstrate the flying controls, and explain how the glider can stay airborne using lift generated by the sun and wind.
Your instructor will also give you the opportunity to fly the glider yourself – it’s not as difficult as you might think. He or she will guide you through with patience and a steady hand. However, you don’t have to take the controls if you don’t want to – you can just sit back and enjoy the view if you prefer.
The views are stunning. If you wish to take photos during your flight you should tell your instructor before the flight commences. Your instructor will advise how you should hold and operate the camera safely.
You and your party are very welcome in our clubhouse, which has a cafe upstairs. The cafe is open most days so you can enjoy a drink and a snack.
All of our instructors are trained to the standards set by the British Gliding Association. The training to the standard is rigorous, and you can be assured that your instructor will look after you before, during and after your flight.
Your First Flight Experience comes with a free three months Club Membership. Within that time you can return to the Club to fly with us as many times as you like and only pay the much reduced Club Members' flying rates. Ask your instructor or at the office for more details.
