Sunday 26th. A light to moderate NNE'ly that slowly backed into the N and a high overcast restricted soaring to a few weak thermals with the best climbs to around 3,700' asl and limited flight times.
Monday 27th. A transient ridge of high pressure resulted in a light wind day, high cloud bases, strong thermals and excellent visibility, resulting in a number of cross countries and 24 ATs off runway 24, 12 of these being for private owners. Chris Handzlik in his DG300 flew the longest task, 290 km, Sutton/Beverley/ Sedbergh/ Sutton, but had to abandon this attempt to get to the Tontine due to a big blue hole over the Vale of York. His best climb to 5.700 asl over Leyburn was sufficient for a 41 km final glide back to site. Kirton in Lindsey was a popular turn point for a number of pilots, with Toby Wilson in his Standard Cirrus, Chris Booker in his LS1 and Chris Teagle in his Kestrel 19 all turning it as part of a Suttton/Kirton/ Helmsley/Goole N/ Sutton task . Thereafter, fortunes varied, with Toby abandoning the Helmsley/Goole leg at Stamford Bridge to cover 250 km, Chris Booker doing the same at Helmsley to cover 187 km and Chris Teagle landing out at Rufforth covering 151 km. Bob Calvert in his Discus 2t also visited Kirton but then returned, abandoning an attempt to get to Tontine some 15 km north of site and landed back after a flight of around 220 km. Bob also found some weak wave near Scunthorpe that resulting in him climbing above the Cumulus to 5,900' asl, as the following photos show.
Jim McClean, flying his ASW24 locally also used the weak wave to climb above the Cumulus, while Fred Brown in his Ventus 2t and Clive Swain/Sally Woolrich in the DG1000 both flew 154 km O/Rs to the Humber Bridge. Paul Whitehead in his Ventus 2cxt flew 188 km around Doncaster NW and Scunthorpe taking advantage of the demise of the controlled airspace over Robin Hood airport. Most pilots reported peak average climbs of 4-5 kts and cloud base of around 5,000' asl. with 5 private owners flying locally.
