Met-guru Keith predicted that thermal strengths would be suitable for competitive tasking from mid-day onwards, but that later in the afternoon some high top-cover would encroach from the west and cut off  the energy.  The comp director therefore chose one of his three planned tasks, with the idea that competitors would need to be back by 4pm to make good use of the conditions.  Weather forecasting is not an exact science, of course, and the top-cover was an hour late, not coming in until 5pm!

Thermals during the day were good in places, but many competitors said that it needed frequent re-centring to make best use of those available.  The Northern's task was a yo-yo around Market Weighton, Kirbymoorside, and North Duffield (all in Yorkshire, hooray!, and avoiding significant airspace).  A task distance of 207.1kms.  G Dale and Graham Bambrook, in Lasham's Duo, won the task at a handicap speed of 89.81kph.  (Full results are available at http://www.soaringspot.com/en_gb/northern-regional-gliding-championships-2017-yorkshire-2017/results/world/task-3-on-2017-08-16/daily ).  At the end of the day G and Graham were topping the competition.

Club flying included four trial flights, Fred Brown and Tony Drury assisting Will in flying these, and there were several long flights by private owners of three to four hours duration.
