The YGC's Gliding Simulator

The simulator is now well and truly in operation. It is providing the opportunity for pupils, solo pilots and instructors to fly on days when we can not contemplate getting anything out of the hanger. It is also earning some revenue for the club.

We have written up some start-up notes to guide users through that process and there is also a manual available in the room. We have also setup some standard flight situations such as "on approach to 24" to allow users to quickly start particular lessons.

We have also setup two challenges for the solo pilots, out and return to CAR (Carlton Bank) and the SUT-POC-RUF-SUT (Sutton Bank - Pocklington - Rufforth - Sutton Bank 100Km) triangle. Thus far the best time to CAR and back is Andy Wright at 102.5kph. This is a really good task for a rainy afternoon as it only takes about 30 minutes, providing lots of scope for a small group to engage in some friendly competition. We have loaded all the flights into the computer so keep a good lookout for other gliders!

Our CFI, Richard Cole has developed a series of syllabuses to ensure instructors and pilots alike are properly trained on the simulator.

Inevitably there will be snags as well as ideas for improvement. To capture these there is a Technical Log in the Manual where these problems and suggestions can be recorded. Please try to be very specific if you make an entry.

Finally I would like to thank everyone who helped on the project. I think that we have an asset that we can be proud of and it would not have happened without a lot of people's hard work and ideas. Thanks and make sure you use it.
