Our Site

Our site is situated on top of an escarpment at the edge of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and benefits from superb ridge lift, thermals, and cracking wave from the Pennines. We fly 7 days a week, 364 days a year (weather permitting), in what can only be described as one of the most perfect settings for gliding. Few airspace restrictions mean we can fly for miles around without hindrance.

IMPORTANT: If you intend to fly with us please take a few minutes to read these Notes for Visiting Pilots.

Hill soaring is possible with winds of 15 knots+ between 180 and 300 deg. With optimal wind speed and direction it's possible to soar the Hambleton Hills for up to 12 miles north of the club.

Wave from the Pennines is likely whenever there is a westerly component in the wind. Most satisfying is to transfer from hill lift into thermal, and then move upwind of the cumulus into the wave system. Alternatively take an aerotow a few miles upwind for the initial contact. Flights in the Gold Height range are common and many pilots achieve Diamond Height flying out of Sutton Bank. The club record is over 33,000 feet!
Imagine sitting at a great height over the 'Backbone of England' with a view of Morecambe Bay to the west and the North Yorkshire coastline to the east. It's magic - come and try it!

Our distinctive Clubhouse complex contains a bar, restaurant (in season), lounge, bedrooms & dormitories, toilets & showers, a self-catering kitchen for members and visitors, a briefing room with PC facilities, workshop and hangars.

We also have a free-to-use Wireless Network. The range of the network extends throughout the Clubhouse, and is free for use by members and visitors. All you need is a 'Wireless-B' or '-G' network card and the network key from the Office to log on!

The Yorkshire Gliding Club is situated approx 6 miles from Thirsk on the A170 towards Scarborough. It is easy to find - the airfield is immediately above the White Horse that can be seen for miles around. By road, we're signposted from the A170, about half a mile down the road from the top of the big hill (Sutton Bank itself).
