Our Fleet

We have a modern fleet of single and two-seaters available for club members and suitably qualified visiting pilots. After site checks, and with the approval of the CFI, you can fly these superb machines but please note we do require solo pilots to produce their UP TO DATE LOGBOOK and also a VALID MEDICAL FORM. This is in line with BGA requirements.

Two-seaters

Two ASK 21 two-seat trainers form the backbone of our training fleet. Docile handling characteristics and good visibility make the K21 a great basic trainer. It's also ideal for the student pilots' first solo, and for basic cross-country training.

The DG1000 is the pride and joy of the club. This beautiful machine is capable of advanced pre-solo training, and also long cross-country flights. Club members often hire this machine for use in competitions and on weekends in summer.

The DG500 is from the same stable as the DG1000. It is perfect for advanced pre-solo training, such as spinning, and is also capable of cross-country soaring.

Two-seat glider simulator

The YGC is proud to announce the addition of a simulator to its fleet. The sim is based around a two-seat glider cockpit, enabling us to augment our training syllabus. Bad weather? No problem! This aircraft can fly whatever the weather outside, and we hope will prove to be a very useful training aid.

Single seaters

We have a range of single seaters, suitable for a range of pilots, from early-solo to Pundit. One of these is even free to pilots aged under 21!

The Discus is a high performance glider with docile handling characteristics. Excellent flights are achieved in this glider which performs equally well in ridge, thermal or wave lift. An ideal cross-country machine.

The DG303 combines good performance with comfort and excellent visibility. The handing is superb and it is equipped with a comprehensive range of instruments.

The Astir CS is generally flown by early-solo pilots to build experience and hours before moving to higher performance gliders. However, it has a fan-club amongst more experienced pilots! It has similar flying characteristics to the K21, although it is more sensitive in pitch. Many early solo pilots have gained Silver and Gold badges in the Astir.

The K8 is the only wooden single-seat glider in our fleet. It fulfils a key role in our fleet in that Junior solo pilots can fly this glider free of charge. It is also popular with ' vintage' pilots who prefer the challenge of soaring in a lower performance machine. The K8 is often be seen "top of the stack" on ridge soaring days and even in wave.

Powered Aircraft

Two Piper Pawnees provide the front-line aerotow facility. Rugged and reliable, the Pawnee is capable of towing gliders in most conditions. They are backed up by a Piper Super Cub which is ideal for towing lighter gliders including vintage machines. It can also be used dual to check out club pilots converting to glider towing.

The Motor Falke provides an excellent facility for various aspects of glider pilot training. In particular it is good for pre-solo pilots wishing to practice circuits and landings without the hassle of aerotows or winch launches. In addition the Motor Falke is almost essential for solo pilots wishing to learn practice field-landings. More experienced pilots benefit from such flights to revise their field selection and outlanding skills.

STOP PRESS!

We have recently bought a Rotax Falke, which is a much nicer and more powerful machine than the old Motor Falke. Later this year we hope to run courses to enable pilots to gain their NPPL (SLMG) at Sutton Bank.
