Yorkshire Gliding Club was founded in 1934 on the moorland above the famous White Horse at Sutton Bank. Its aim was then and is now, to enable men and women from all backgrounds to participate in the flying experience. Early pilots, including the famous Amy Johnston who honed her flying skills here, used updraughts from the escarpment in strong westerly winds to stay aloft in their basic machines.
Today, sleek modern gliders using air currents defy gravity with ease for long periods and distances. The White Horse welcomes pilots home, often returning from flights well over 100 miles and taking several hours. Participants enjoy the purest form of flying there is.
It's easier and less expensive than most people think.
Apart from Club flying, each year through our Air Experience Programme we fly around 300 members of the public including school pupils and Scouts and would like to do more!
The Club's ground facilities include a restaurant, lounge with superb views.
